Embroidered vs Woven Patches
The most common fork in the road, settled properly. Both are thread on fabric; the difference is how the thread gets there — and that changes everything about detail, texture and cost.

The comparison
| Factor | Embroidered | Woven |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Thread stitched onto twill | Thread woven into the fabric |
| Surface | Raised, textured, catches light | Flat, smooth, label-like |
| Minimum text | ~5mm cap height | ~3mm cap height |
| Fine detail | Limited — stitches crowd | Excellent — double the resolution |
| Colours | 6–8 typical | Up to 12 |
| Feel | Classic, heritage, 'earned' | Crisp, modern, precise |
| Durability | 60°C wash, industrial safe | Equal |
| Unit cost | Baseline | ~10–20% less |
The decision, in one paragraph
Choose embroidery for crests, uniforms and anything that should feel traditional and tactile — raised thread is the look of authority. Choose woven for small logos, dense lettering, labels and anything where fine detail must survive at small sizes. If you're unsure, send the artwork: we'll stitch-test the decision on your actual design, free.
Common questions
On separate patches, yes — brands often run a woven label range alongside embroidered crests from the same artwork. On one patch, the constructions can't be combined (that's 3D puff's job, in embroidery alone).
It's a tie. Both are thread, both wash to 60°C on sew-on backing. Choose on looks and detail, not longevity.
