Iron-On vs Sew-On Patches
Backings are the most underestimated decision in a patch order. The prettiest crest in the range is worthless if it peels off in the wash — choose the backing for the garment, not the convenience.

The comparison
| Factor | Iron-on | Sew-on |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Household iron, ~2 minutes | Stitched — machine or alterations shop |
| Fabrics | Cotton, poly-cotton, denim | Everything incl. hi-viz, nylon, shells |
| Wash rating | 30°C inside-out | 60°C+, industrial laundering |
| Permanence | Years; corner-tack for life | Lifetime of the garment |
| Removal | Reheat and peel | Cut stitches, lift, done |
| Cost | +15p per patch | Included — our default |
The uniform buyer's rule
Common questions
Yes — the digitised design is unchanged; only the backing layer differs. Reorders from file make trying the other option cheap.
The opposite — sew-on is our default and carries no surcharge. Heat-seal adds around 15p per patch.
