Complete Guide to Patch Backings: Iron-On vs Sew-On vs Velcro
The backing you choose affects how your patch attaches, how long it lasts, and how easy it is to apply. This guide covers every backing option so you can make the right choice.
Sew-On Backing
Best for: Uniforms, workwear, items that will be washed frequently
Sew-on is the most permanent and durable backing option. The patch is stitched directly onto the garment, creating a bond that will last as long as the garment itself.
Advantages:
- ✓Extremely durable and permanent
- ✓Withstands industrial washing at 60°C
- ✓Works on any fabric type
- ✓No additional cost (our default option)
Considerations:
- •Requires sewing (by you or a tailor)
- •Not removable without cutting stitches
Iron-On Backing
Best for: Casual clothing, personal projects, easy application
Iron-on backing uses heat-activated adhesive to bond the patch to your garment. Application takes just a few minutes with a household iron.
Advantages:
- ✓Easy application — no sewing required
- ✓Quick and convenient
- ✓Good for casual use
Considerations:
- •May not withstand frequent hot washing
- •Not suitable for all fabrics (check garment care label)
- •Small additional cost (+15p per patch)
Pro tip: For the best of both worlds, order iron-on backing and then sew around the edges. The adhesive holds the patch in place while you sew, and the stitching makes it permanent.
Velcro (Hook & Loop) Backing
Best for: Tactical gear, morale patches, items where you want to swap patches
Velcro backing allows you to attach and remove patches easily. The hook side is attached to the patch, and a loop panel is sewn or stuck to your garment or gear.
Advantages:
- ✓Removable and reusable
- ✓Easy to swap between items
- ✓Perfect for tactical and morale patches
Considerations:
- •Requires a loop panel on the garment
- •Small additional cost (+45p per patch)
- •Not as secure as sew-on for heavy use
Adhesive Backing
Best for: Temporary use, non-fabric surfaces, quick application
Adhesive backing is like a sticker — peel off the backing and stick the patch on. It's the easiest option but also the least permanent.
Advantages:
- ✓Instant application
- ✓No heat or sewing required
- ✓Works on non-fabric surfaces
Considerations:
- •Not permanent — will eventually peel off
- •Not suitable for washing
- •Best for temporary or decorative use
Which Backing Should You Choose?
Here's a quick decision guide:
- →Uniform or workwear that gets washed weekly? Choose sew-on.
- →Casual jacket or personal project? Iron-on is convenient and works well.
- →Tactical gear or morale patches? Velcro gives you flexibility to swap patches.
- →Temporary display or non-fabric surface? Adhesive is your best bet.
