Patch Care & Maintenance Guide
Your patches are built to last, but proper care ensures they stay looking great for years. This guide covers washing, storage, and maintenance tips for every patch type and backing.
Washing Instructions by Backing Type
Sew-On Patches
Sew-on patches are the most durable and can handle the most rigorous washing:
- ✓Machine wash at up to 60°C
- ✓Can be tumble dried on low heat
- ✓Safe for industrial laundering
- ✓Can be dry cleaned
Iron-On Patches
Iron-on patches require more careful washing to maintain the adhesive bond:
- ✓Machine wash at 30-40°C (not 60°C)
- ✓Turn garment inside out before washing
- ✓Avoid tumble drying (heat can weaken adhesive)
- ✓Avoid dry cleaning (chemicals can dissolve adhesive)
Pro tip: For iron-on patches that will be washed frequently, sew around the edges after applying. This gives you the ease of iron-on application with the durability of sew-on.
Velcro Patches
Velcro patches are easy to care for because you can remove them before washing:
- ✓Remove patch before washing the garment
- ✓Hand wash patches gently if needed
- ✓Allow to air dry completely before reattaching
- ✓Keep hook side free of lint and debris
Care Tips by Patch Type
Embroidered Patches
Embroidered patches are extremely durable and require minimal care:
- ✓Thread colours are fade-resistant
- ✓Can handle repeated washing
- ✓If threads become loose, trim carefully with small scissors
Woven Patches
Woven patches are also very durable but have finer detail:
- ✓Handle with same care as embroidered patches
- ✓Avoid pulling at loose threads (can unravel fine detail)
- ✓Iron on reverse side if needed (use low heat)
PVC Patches
PVC patches are waterproof and extremely durable:
- ✓Can be washed with soap and water
- ✓UV resistant — colours won't fade in sunlight
- ✓Wipe clean with damp cloth for quick cleaning
- ✓Avoid sharp objects that could puncture the PVC
Printed Patches
Printed patches require the most careful handling:
- ✓Wash at 30°C maximum
- ✓Turn inside out before washing
- ✓Avoid tumble drying and ironing directly on the print
- ✓Print may fade over time with heavy use (this is normal)
Storage Tips
If you have spare patches or patches waiting to be applied:
- •Store flat: Keep patches flat to avoid creasing or bending.
- •Avoid moisture: Store in a dry place to prevent mould or adhesive issues.
- •Keep away from direct sunlight: Prolonged UV exposure can fade colours over time.
- •Separate Velcro patches: Store hook and loop sides separately to prevent them sticking together.
How Long Do Patches Last?
With proper care, our patches are built to last:
- •Embroidered patches: 5-10+ years with normal use and washing
- •Woven patches: 5-10+ years with normal use and washing
- •PVC patches: 10+ years — extremely durable and weather-resistant
- •Printed patches: 2-5 years with careful use (print may fade over time)
The backing also affects longevity. Sew-on patches will last as long as the garment itself. Iron-on patches may need reapplication after 2-3 years of heavy washing. Velcro patches can last indefinitely if the hook and loop remain in good condition.
